Workers and COVID: the crisis and beyond!

Check the 20th-anniversary issue of Benchmarking Working Europe! This flagship publication has allowed the European Trade Union Institute and the European Trade Union Confederation to contribute to crucial European debates based on the fact-based analysis.

This year’s 20th-anniversary issue conveys a simple warning: beside SARS-CoV-2, ‘austerity’ is the other nefarious agent from which Europe as a whole need to be protected in the challenging months and years ahead.

A new wave of austerity could not only undermine the post-Covid recovery, but it could also fundamentally undermine the European social and economic integration project.

It is particularly apt for the 20th-anniversary issue of Benchmarking, to set out the ETUI and the ETUC case for a socially responsive and ecologically sustainable road out of the Covid-19 crisis.

The European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) is the independent research and training centre of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) speaks with a single voice, on behalf of workers’ common interests, at European level. Founded in 1973, it now represents 45 million members from 90 trade union organisations in 38 European countries, plus 10 European Trade Union Federations.

European DSOs connect 260 million customers

The electricity distribution network is the direct link between energy consumers on the one hand and electricity generation and transmission on the other. It is the ‘backbone’ of our energy system.

European DSOs connect 260 million customers, of which the vast majority are residential households and small enterprises.

The E.DSO brochure entitled ‘Lead the Transition – Serve the Customers’ presents a set of key messages on customer-DSO interactions.

It looks at the changing regulatory framework following the adoption of the Clean Energy for All Europeans Package and particularly the relevant consumer and DSO provisions.

Different use cases on how DSOs interact with their customers are presented. These include

  1.  Arranging a grid connection,
  2.  Providing relevant data (e.g. consumption data through smart metering,
  3.  communication (e.g. in case of disturbances or outages,
  4.  Facilitating data exchanges with the third parties,
  5.  Enabling new and innovative services and helping customers to become active and reap the benefits of the energy transition.

The European Green Deal is expected to deliver additional value for energy consumers. DSOs are committed to this objective, and therefore ask the European Commission for close stakeholder engagement.

DSOs have the capacity and are willing to play a vital role to drive the decarbonisation and digitalisation plan, with the ultimate goal to strengthen customers and deliver the energy transition.

European Distribution System Operators (E.DSO) is the key-interface between the leading electricity distribution system operators (DSOs) and the European institutions and stakeholders.

E.DSO promotes the development and large-scale testing of smart grid technologies in real-life situations, new market designs and regulation.

E.DSO gathers 41 leading electricity distribution system operators (DSOs) in 24 countries, including 2 national associations, cooperating to ensure the reliability of Europe’s electricity supply for consumers and enabling their active participation in our energy system.

The Communication Agency, Page in extremis is glad to have developed the graphic design of the E.DSO brochure.

The result is a comprehensive publication made within a genuine creative dialogue involving the E.DSO communication team and the Belgian communication agency’s creative unit.

Page in extremis turns brands into valuable assets and ensures the alignment with their strategic objectives.

Are we losing nature in Belgium?

The new report “Living Planet - Nature in Belgium” is a unique reference document on which political decision-makers can rely to better understand and protect our environment.

It is urgent to realise that taking care of nature is taking care of ourself. All our economic activities and even the whole of society depend on absolutely vital “ecosystem services”: soil fertilisation, a healthy environment with clean air and clean water, food, raw materials …

The richer the biodiversity, the more humanity benefits from these essential services.

But beyond these benefits, nature has an intrinsic value.

It would be wise to view humans as fully integrated into their natural environment. Discover the new “Living Planet - Nature in Belgium” report, and learn how our natural environment plays a determining role in their physical and mental health?

Committed to Europe - Agenda for Action 2019-2024

Aggregate US investment in Europe totalled €2 trillion in 2017 and directly sustains more than 4.7 million jobs. Across Europe, American companies play a crucial role in supporting and ensuring the prosperity of local communities, which together contribute to making a stronger EU that continues to be a powerful innovation hub and preferred investment destination.

With sustained focus, Europe can remain one of the most attractive regions in the world to do business, but also one of the best places to live, study, work and raise a family.

The publication Agenda for Action 2019-2024 outlines the four priority areas AmCham EU believes should drive the political agenda over the next five years: empowering people, boosting the Single Market, leading global cooperation and investing in the future.

AmCham EU speaks for American companies committed to Europe on trade, investment and competitiveness issues. It aims to ensure a growth-orientated business and investment climate in Europe.

AmCham EU facilitates the resolution of transatlantic issues that impact business and plays a role in creating a better understanding of EU and US positions on business matters.

Agenda for Action 2019-2024 is the result of the collaboration between the AmCham EU communication unit and the creative team of Page in extremis. The Communication Agency Page in extremis is delighted to benefit from the repeated trust of AmCham EU.

What are the advocacy highlights of LightingEurope in 2019?

2019 was a year of change for the EU, with elections to the European Parliament and a new Commission college taking office in December.

The LightingEurope Secretariat has been meeting the new Members of the European Parliament from May to December to offer their expertise on the policy files related to the lighting industry.

Simultaneously, the #betterlighting campaign has been complemented with www.europeanlightingpriorities.eu, outlining how lighting contributes to achieving key EU priorities.

In the 2019 LightingEurope annual report, Ms Georgoutsakou made a thought-provoking statement: “regulators’ KPIs should be based not on the number of rules they make, but on how effective these rules are in achieving their objectives and on how easy they are for companies to understand and apply and for authorities to enforce”.

And the LightingEurope General Secretary to indicate that over the next few months,  the European Lighting association “will focus on delivering guidance to {Their} members and to regulators on how to apply and enforce EU rules and on advocating for a clear legal framework that fosters fair competition among all actors on the EU market”.

Discover the new LightingEurope annual report, and learn about EU policy topics impacting lighting and the advocacy highlights and achievements in 2019.

How to create a continuous flow of communication?

Developing a continuous communication flow is crucial to increase the level of memorisation of your messages exponentially.
Planning plays a central rôle to fulfil this objective.

Let’s have a look at a case study:

Labour markets need to evolve to ensure that they remain open, inclusive and sustainable. The World Employment Confederation-Europe (WEC-Europe) believes that it has a leadership role to play in building such future proof labour markets.

How is the private employment industry making a difference in the new world of work? The industry believes in “social innovation” as the way forward.

To illustrate that statement, WEC-Europe has published based on an annual plan various communication products on both digital and print channel.

First, WEC-Europe adopted a Manifesto entitled “No Future of Work without Social Innovation”, developing a set of recommendations and explicit calls for action.

Based on this Manifesto, the European organisation unveiled its own vision in the brochure “Making Europe the best place to work!”.

Examples of social innovation initiatives developed by members were then made available on a dedicated “Social Innovation Stories” web platform.

Finally, for facts, figures and case studies evidencing the impact of private employment services on labour markets, the recently published “Social Impact Report” has become a must-have resource.

All these communication touchpoints were developed by the communication team of WEC-Europe in close collaboration with the creative staff of the communication agency inextremis.be

New opportunities for investing in children

The 2019 Eurochild Report on the European Semester has been launched in the European Parliament at the event Towards No child poverty in Europe 2030: Preventing and tackling child poverty.

The European Semester is the EU’s economic, social and employment policy framework that runs on a yearly cycle. The Report responds to the 2019 European Semester with a children’s rights perspective of 29 Eurochild members who represent 22 European countries!

It’s four main recommendations are as follows:

1.    Ensure that children are included in the next policy framework driving the European Semester

2.    Use the link between EU funding and the European Semester to promote the social dimension of policies

3.    Include a focus on children’s well-being in the EU’s analysis of national policy development in the Country Reports

4.    Make the engagement of civil society in the European Semester a requirement for both Member States and the European Commission

Eurochild is a network of organisations and individuals working in and across Europe to promote the rights and well-being of children and young people.

The mission of the network is to promote the rights and well-being of children in policy and practise through advocacy, membership exchange and research.

Eurochild’s work is underpinned by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). An international human rights treaty that grants all children and young people a comprehensive set of rights.

The network is co-funded by the European Union’s Programme for Employment and Social Innovation (EaSI). A financing instrument at EU level which promotes, amongst others, combating social exclusion & poverty.

The communication agency, Page in extremis is proud to have participated, in the creative development and the graphical production of the Report.

FIEC releases its Construction Manifesto for Action

Through its 31 national member federations in 27 European countries (24 EU & EFTA and Turkey), FIEC represents, without discrimination, construction enterprises of all sizes, from all building and civil engineering specialities, engaged in all kinds of working methods.

FIEC speaks for the European Construction Industry. The European construction industry contributes 9% to the EU GDP and employs 14.5 million people in 3 million enterprises, most of which are SMEs with less than 20 operatives.

FIEC’s manifesto prioritises key areas for action covering the three pillars of sustainability: people, planet and profit.

Health and safety and skills; climate change and the Circular Economy and investment and fair competition all feature in the manifesto, which coincides with a period of transformation in construction as the industry accelerates the adoption of digital technology.

This wide-ranging representativeness of FIEC was officially recognised in several studies undertaken on behalf of the European Commission, so that since the creation of the European Sectoral Social Dialogue «Construction» in 1999, FIEC has been the Social Partner representing employers.

The publication is the result of the co-creative framework that occurred between the FIEC team and the creative staff of the communication agency, Page in extremis.
